Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year, is the most important and widely celebrated festival in China. It marks the beginning of a new year according to the traditional lunar calendar. As a fourth-grade student, I would like to share with you some of the traditions and customs that we follow during this festive season.
Family Reunions
During Spring Festival, families gather together to have a big reunion dinner. This is a time when everyone sets aside their busy schedules and comes back home to celebrate with their loved ones. We enjoy a delicious feast, exchange gifts, and share stories and laughter. It’s a wonderful time for bonding and strengthening family ties.
Red Envelopes
One of the most exciting parts of Spring Festival is receiving red envelopes, also known as “hongbao”. These red envelopes usually contain money and are given by adults to children as a symbol of good luck and blessings for the upcoming year. We eagerly await these red envelopes and it brings us joy and excitement.
Fireworks and Dragon Dances
Fireworks and dragon dances are an integral part of Spring Festival celebrations. We light up the sky with colorful fireworks to scare away evil spirits and bring good luck. The dragon dance is a traditional performance where a team of people operates a long dragon made of cloth and bamboo, twisting and turning through the streets as they dance to the beat of drums and cymbals.
Decorations and Spring Couplet
During Spring Festival, every household is adorned with red decorations, such as lanterns, couplets, and paper cuttings. The Spring Couplet, also known as “Chunlian” in Chinese, is a pair of poetic phrases written on red paper and pasted on both sides of the front door. The couplet expresses good wishes for the new year and is believed to bring good fortune and drive away evil spirits.
Traditional Foods
There are many traditional foods that we enjoy during Spring Festival. One of the most popular is dumplings, which are shaped like ancient Chinese money and symbolize wealth and prosperity. We also eat fish, as the Chinese word for fish sounds like “surplus” in Chinese, symbolizing a surplus of wealth and good luck in the new year. Another favorite treat is “nian gao”, a sweet sticky rice cake that represents a higher position and better income in the coming year.
Spring Festival Gala
On the eve of Spring Festival, families gather around the TV to watch the Spring Festival Gala, a grand variety show that includes performances such as singing, dancing, acrobatics, and comedy sketches. We enjoy the lively performances and it creates a festive atmosphere in our homes.
The Lantern Festival
The Lantern Festival is the end of the Spring Festival celebration. People go out at night to appreciate the colorful lanterns, solve riddles written on them, and eat sweet glutinous rice balls called “tangyuan”. It is a time of joy, as we bid farewell to the old year and welcome the arrival of spring.
